(12/18/06)  Valley Books, a downtown institution since 1975, is moving to a new location almost directly across the street from its current spot.

As of the beginning of January, the store’s vast inventory of used, old, new and audio books will reside at 220 North Pleasant Street, the former home of Dance Stuff. That is the same building that houses Hair by Harlow and Blue Sky Contemporary Crafts.  Valley Books will have an enclosed display window in the front of the building, but the entrance will be in the back, where there is also ample parking.

Owner Larry Pruner said the move will enable him to feature the store’s complete inventory on one floor.  The current location, where the store has been since June of 1987, has stairs, as have the two previous locations at 233 North Pleasant Street and 5 East Pleasant Street.

Another benefit of the move, according to Pruner, is lower rent for nearly the same amount of space.  While the new location is smaller, Pruner called the spatial difference “an insignificant amount of loss.”

And that’s a good thing because Valley Books’ inventory numbers around 40,000 volumes.  Pruner has been “culling the shelves and donating a lot of books,” and he is holding a big sale in anticipation of the move.  But he expects to have to pack and move 30-35,000 books across the street.

The sale, well-timed for holiday shopping, offers a 10% discount off new books and audio books.  Used book buyers receive 10% off one book, 20% off two books, 30% off three or four books, and 40% off five or more books.

Pruner expects to open at the new location on or about January 2nd.

Valley Books has a web site at www.valleybooks.com, and can be reached by e-mail at valleybooks@verizon.net or by phone at 256-1508.

Valley Books’ new location will be in this building. The window in the middle will showcase its displays and the store’s entrance will be around the back.

Thanks for the information. Maybe you could review some of the other businesses in town. I especially like the new jewelry store M & M Links. I was surprised to find it so affordable.
