Stalling for time

Yes, the Select Board met May 23rd.  No, the recap still hasn't been posted a week later.  The long version is still pending, but here's the really short version:

New flower planters are downtown.

The SB voted to recommend Article 1 for the June 6th Special Town Meeting, regarding FY07 budget amendments.

They put off discussion of Article 2, regarding privatizing Cherry Hill, because the petitioner was not present.

They voted to send a letter Amherst's State reps urging advocacy for local control of negotiating cable television contracts.

They received Town Counsel's recommendation to reconsider Article 16 – the Regional School assessment formula – and to then table it until after that budget is addressed as part of Article 17.  The Superintendent recommended that all parties compromise at 2% to avoid a protracted battle.  The SB's vote to recommend the 2% assessment was tied 2-2 (Yes:  Weiss and Brewer.  No: Awad and Greeney) and was then deferred until the fifth member could be present.  They decided to recommend that the Regional School budget be addressed at the June 4th Town Meeting session.

The School Committee reported that it had voted 4-1 to recommend a 1% budget for the elementary schools, and all four SB members present voted to recommend that figure to Town Meeting.

The four SB members present voted to recommend the CPAC historical preservation proposal but without the $40,000 for the cemetery fence in South Amherst.

They approved the special wine and malt license for the Taste of Amherst.

Next meeting 5/31/07 at 6:00 p.m. in the music room at the Middle School.

Update 6/4:  The long version of the recap is now posted here.
